Celebrating 130 Years of Legacy
Lau Pa Sat, Singapore’s only hawker market under a gazetted national monument, commemorated its 130th anniversary by launching “Feast for the Senses” experiences, a series of exclusive activities, assets, merchandise and deals for the public to enjoy.
Launch of Lau Pa Sat Heritage Trail
Singaporeans and visitors will now be able to immerse themselves in the history of Lau Pa Sat, with an interactive Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) Lau Pa Sat Heritage Trail. More than a year in the making, the trail will take visitors back in time to witness the iconic hawker market’s humble beginnings as a seaside wet market. AR and VR technology will enable guests to view the area’s historic vistas first-hand, from the now defunct Telok Ayer Police Station in its heyday to the seaside landscape in front of Raffles Quay, to bustling scenes of fishermen and street hawkers peddling their wares by the roadside.
Ringing In A New Era
“The Song of Lau Pa Sat”—a heartwarming commemorative track composed by Dick Lee, the critically acclaimed singer-songwriter and recipient of the 2005 Cultural Medallion—beautifully captures the vibrant essence of the iconic hawker market. Lee’s signature lyrical style evokes the lively atmosphere, creating a melodic tribute that resonates with both locals and visitors.
The Island Voices’ evocative cover will also play hourly, harmonizing with the clock tower’s new chimes to establish Lau Pa Sat’s new sonic signature. The melody, echoing through the Central Business District, is designed to stir deep emotions, forging a strong sense of pride and connection to one of Singapore’s beloved National Monuments.
